"For the born writer, nothing is so healing as the realization that he has come upon the right word.”
- Catherine Drinker Bowen
I've been a writer all my life. As far back as I can remember I've been trying to tell stories with pictures and words, and then pictures made of words.
When I studied Literature in college I dreamed of becoming rich and famous like Hemingway and Steinbeck. Later, I lowered my aim to more modest goals. It would be enough, I decided, just to finish a novel.
While I built a successful business in another field, I pursued that goal. Years later my daughter asked me if building a business was the hardest thing I had ever done. I replied without hesitation, "No. Writing a novel was."
I honed my craft over the years and churned out a couple of half-baked efforts. Then I hit on a subject I could really sink my teeth into. I asked myself, What is the least known part of Western History? To my surprise it was also one of the most fascinating: The Fall of the Roman Empire.
I resolved to write about it, and the result is the Amulet Series, which tells the story of the last 50 years of the Roman Empire spread over five novels.
I hope you will read it.
